Seven things we learned from Gamescom opening night
It has been a year with no major new console launches and where the industry has seen strikes and cuts with thousands of workers being laid off. The opening night of Gamescom is often an opportunity for a big shiny night to get fans all excited for the year ahead. Setting the stage for the next 12 months, here are the biggest things we found out from Europe's biggest gaming show in Germany. In a year when games became films, and films became games, the convention centre in Cologne saw a night all about the big trailers. This year, Borderlands has taken attention for its movie adaptation starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart. That film received some of the year's harshest reviews, but that has not scuppered plans for a new game in the mainline series.

Terramera leading project to predict future strains of COVID-19 with AI
Vancouver-based agricultural technology company Terramera is leading a new research project that hopes to use machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to get ahead of COVID-19. The collaborative project hopes to avoid future pandemics via better forecasting and pre-design of effective vaccines, antibodies, and tests. Terramera plans to deliver computational models to identify and combat future mutants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. "Instead of playing catch-up again … we'll predict likely new strains with our machine learning models." British Columbia's Digital Technology Supercluster, backed by the Government of Canada, will support Terramera's effort with $1.8 million CAD in initial funding through its COVID-19 program, which seeks to protect the health and safety of Canadians and the country's economy "through the development, deployment, and scaling of digital technologies."
Esri releases End-to-End Deep Learning Workflow Web App
Esri has released a new web application for users that want to integrate deep learning into their imagery workflows. Deep Learning Studio, available with the release of ArcGIS Enterprise 11, offers a collaborative environment where multiple users can work together on a image-based project that includes deep learning. With the app, multiple users can work on a single project and perform deep learning tasks, such as collecting training samples, train deep learning models and run inferencing at scale. The app combines multiple things at once: a frontend experience to deep learning tasks that are part of backend raster analytics, a collaborative environment that divides otherwise tedious deep learning tasks over multiple users and a complete end-to-end deep learning workflow, that is offered through a user-friendly project wizard (figure 3). Although the app requires no local software installations, it requires both ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Image Server, as these provide the data and analytics tools that are accessed through the app.
AI will help realize the true vision the Metaverse hopes to achieve
The metaverse space is moving rapidly in terms of hype and the volume of new projects being launched -- so much so that the industry market size is projected to grow from $100.27 billion in 2022 to $1,527.55 billion by 2029. But how many of these new projects are even remotely capable of realizing the actual vision set out? Many of the metaverse projects that have been launched are in the world of gaming. However, more often than not, these projects simply consist of standard gaming features combined with virtual reality and NFTs. A true metaverse, in the sense of a digital parallel universe to our analog world, a digital simulated reality in which participants can take part in diverse social, economic, entertainment and artistic activities in a variety of self-organized groupings and environments, has yet to be realized.
